What is IB?

IB stands for International Baccalaureate, which is an internationally recognized educational program that aims to provide students with a well-rounded education and develop their intellectual, personal, emotional, and social skills. The program is designed for students aged 16 to 19, although there are also earlier programs available for younger students.

The International Baccalaureate offers several programs, but the most well-known and commonly referred to as “IB” is the Diploma Program (IBDP). The IBDP is a two-year pre-university course of study that prepares students for higher education and is widely respected by universities around the world.

The IB Diploma Program consists of a broad range of subjects grouped into six subject groups: Language and Literature, Language Acquisition, Individuals and Societies, Sciences, Mathematics, and the Arts. Students are required to study subjects from each group to ensure a balanced education. In addition to these subject groups, students also complete three core requirements: Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Extended Essay (EE), and Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS).

Theory of Knowledge (TOK) is a course that explores the nature of knowledge across disciplines and encourages critical thinking and reflection on how knowledge is acquired and evaluated. The Extended Essay (EE) is an independent research project where students choose a topic of interest and write a 4,000-word essay. Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS) requires students to engage in creative pursuits, physical activities, and community service.

Assessment in the IB Diploma Program is both internal and external. Internal assessments are conducted by teachers throughout the program and may include essays, oral presentations, and practical projects. External assessments are conducted by external examiners and typically include written exams at the end of the two-year program.

The IB program is known for its rigorous and holistic approach to education, promoting critical thinking, research skills, intercultural understanding, and global perspectives. It aims to develop well-rounded individuals who are prepared for success in higher education and beyond. The IB Diploma is widely recognized by universities worldwide and can enhance students’ chances of admission to prestigious institutions.
